What is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a common operation that combines breast rejuvenation with abdominal wall contouring. Dr. Brenner is a top cosmetic surgeon providing some of the best results after Mommy Makeovers Beverly Hills and Los Angeles have to offer. This procedure is key to helping mothers rejuvenate the beautiful and youthful figures they had prior to giving birth.

Mommy makeovers are frequently done in one stage. The most common procedure combination includes a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and breast enhancement with implants (breast augmentation). However, mommy makeovers can also be done in two operations and can include additional surgeries, such as breast lift (mastopexy), breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) and liposuction on the hips, thighs, abdomen, and back. Since many women tend to develop umbilical hernias during their gestational period, repair of umbilical hernias is often one of the most common procedures performed during makeovers for moms.

When seeing a patient to determine exactly what they need for a Mommy Makeover, a great deal of time is spent planning the correct and most effective breast operation. The correct procedure is determined by the extent of the breast deformity or abnormality that exists in the patient prior to undergoing the surgery and the changes they would like to make to their breasts. The procedures this could entail would include: breast reduction, breast augmentation or breast lift (as separate procedures or as one procedure of a breast lift with augmentation). Each of these operations has inherent benefits, risks and potential complications, however the topic of a one-stage breast lift and augmentation with implant is the most controversial.

Mommy Makeover FAQ's

Who is a candidate for a mommy makeover?

An ideal candidate for a mommy makeover is in good overall health, is close to her goal weight, has realistic expectations about what can be achieved through the procedure, and is equipped with a support system to allow her to take time off and recover following surgery. Any woman who would like to restore her pre-baby body and confidence following pregnancy, childbirth, or massive weight loss could be a suitable candidate for a mommy makeover. Women who are suffering from loose, excess skin, sagging breasts, stretch marks, stubborn fat deposits, or the visible signs of aging may all be suitable candidates.

Can I still have a mommy makeover even if I haven’t had children?

Yes! Even if you’ve never gone through pregnancy or childbirth, you can still have what we call a mommy makeover. Each mommy makeover is a unique combination of procedures specifically designed to create a sleek, youthful figure. With Dr. Brenner’s expert guidance, a full body makeover can be customized to match your individual needs. Your mommy makeover will fully rejuvenate all body areas that require treatment to restore your feminine contours with just the right touch.

Should I wait until I’m done having children?

In general, it is advised that you wait until you are finished having children before you have a mommy makeover. The issues that originally led you to seek a mommy makeover could return if you choose to have further children. Sagging breasts, loose abdominal skin, and areas of stubborn excess fat typically return with additional pregnancies, requiring further treatment.

However, there are also special circumstances where you may have lost a significant amount of weight prior to pregnancy, leaving excess skin and drooping breasts that could be considered excessive. In these instances, a Dr. Brenner can help you weigh all of the options and decide what the best course of treatment is for you and your body.

Are all procedures done at one time?

Each mommy makeover is a customized set of procedures designed to meet your vision for your body. While some women choose to have all of their procedures completed in one surgery, others may need to undergo two surgeries. The extent and type of surgery required will determine the number of procedures that needed to complete your mommy makeover.

What are the risks?

While rare, a mommy makeover does carry some risks including bleeding, improper wound healing, infection, and fluid retention. Dr. Brenner will gladly explain all the risks associated with a mommy makeover at your consultation.

Will I have scars following my mommy makeover?

Yes, unfortunately scars are an inevitable part of any surgical procedure. For this reason, it is imperative that you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in the procedures associated with a mommy makeover. Dr. Brenner has the technical skill and artistic eye that will allow him to place your incisions in the most discreet locations, and close them with extreme care, along with follow-up scar care treatments to ensure they are minimally visible once completely healed.

Combining procedures during a mommy makeover

When can I receive mommy makeover surgery?

Many women have significant changes in their breasts after pregnancy and the subsequent process of breast feeding. And in some cases, it can feel like an eternity before they are able to receive mommy makeover surgery to help remedy this. The most common question on this subject is, "How long do I need to wait after giving birth before I can have undergo a breast augmentation?" Unfortunately, there is no one answer and it can vary between every mom. Some Beverly Hills plastic surgeons, and others across the country, may not have the same determination. However, there are a few general guidelines that you may find helpful:

  • A typical pregnancy is approximately 40 weeks long.  Many mom’s during this time will undergo hormonally induced changes (enlargement, hypertrophy, skin stretching). There are many instances where it can take an additional 40 weeks for the breasts to return to normal after delivery.
  • All women gain weight during pregnancy and some of that weight gain is within the breast tissue. Breast tissue has both fibrous breast tissue (ligaments and ducts) and fatty breast tissue. During the pregnancy, and the period of time after of breast feeding, both components of the mom’s breast tissue will hypertrophy. After breast feeding is ended, the ductal tissue will naturally regress but the fatty breast tissue will only regress once a woman’s weight begins to approach her pre-pregnancy weight. It has been seen that this process can take anywhere from six months to a year.
  • If your breast is lactating then you should not undergo elective surgery! It is quite difficult for a surgeon to operate on a breast that is actively producing milk and absolutely will decrease the accuracy of the operation. The milk can form into pockets within the breast (i.e. lactocele) and this increases the risk of post-operative breast and breast implant infections. Once you stop breastfeeding your child, you should still allow a minimum of six months to elapse before undergoing elective breast surgery (i.e. breast augmentation, breast reduction, mastopexy). Some surgeons actually prefer to have their patients wait a full year to allow the breast ducts plenty of time to return to their baseline structure and function. As a note, some moms have the condition where their breasts are secreting breast milk up to 2 years after stopping all breast feeding.
